Seahawks could face a tough effort from desperate Lions

It has come to my attention, probably because I brought it to my own attention, that I wasn’t very good at picking the outcome of games against the spread in September.

I’ve gone 1-2 with the Cougs, 1-2 with the Seahawks and 0-3 with the Smokin’ Jim Moore Lock of the Week. I feel like I could predict that the sun will come up tomorrow and we’d get the moon instead.

But it’s a new month, and you know what that means? That’s right, October is Battery Month at O’Reilly Auto Parts! And it’s also the month that I turn it around.

I’ve already “revealed” the Cougar pick – predicting Cal will beat Washington State 59-24 and cover the 17 ½-point spread – and the Lock of the Week, taking Arizona -7 against St. Louis.

Now it’s time for the Seahawks selection. They’re favored by 10 over the winless Lions on Monday Night Football from CenturyLink Field.

For the Seahawks, it’s a chance to even their record at 2-2. We’ll all be wondering if they’ll get their first rushing touchdown and first interception of the year and guessing they will. The Lions are 20th in the league against the run, and Matt Stafford has thrown five interceptions in three games.

Statistically, the Lions are terrible across the board, allowing nearly 400 yards a game while sputtering on offense, ranked 27th in the NFL. It’s hard to understand with the weapons they have – Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate and Eric Ebron. Part of the problem stems from a sorry offensive line and league-worst running game.

But I’m still a Lions’ fan. Why? Mainly because a Coug, Jason Hanson, kicked for them for 20 years, between 1992-2012. Not that great of a reason, I know, but I followed the Lions for a long time because of Hanson and always wanted him on my fantasy team because he was such a reliable kicker and a Coug to boot.

The 2015 version of the Lions look like they’re trying to get their coach fired. And tell me if this sounds familiar – fans in Detroit are upset with the play-calling from their offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi.

The Seahawks have their own issues, hoping to get off to a better start this week while wondering if Marshawn Lynch will be able to play. His hamstring injury may give rookie Thomas Rawls his second consecutive start.

The Seahawks do not want to go to Cincinnati next week at 1-3, but I’m thinking the Lions don’t want to go 0-4 either. Added up, I’m expecting a fired-up, last-stand effort from the Lions, but they won’t beat the Seahawks, who have won nine Monday night games in a row and are about to make it 10.

Line: Seahawks by 10.
Prediction: Seahawks 27, Lions 21.
Season record against the spread: 1-2.
