Seahawks Thursday practice report: Kam Chancellor, Russell Okung, Doug Baldwin out again

RENTON – Kam Chancellor took his first steps in recovering from a bruised tailbone on Wednesday when he ran. His recovery stalled Thursday, though, when the Seahawks’ strong safety was too sore to work out. That leaves him a question mark to return after missing last week’s game.

“We’ll have to wait and see,” coach Pete Carroll said after Thursday’s practice. “Couldn’t work today.”

Left tackle Russell Okung’s status is just as uncertain. He hasn’t been able to practice at all this week after leaving Sunday’s game with a strained calf.

“He’s questionable at this point, I would think,” Carroll said. “And we’ll see what happens, and see if we can upgrade him or downgrade him all the way to game time.”

Seattle won’t announce the official playing status of players until Friday when the Seahawks will return to work after a slight holiday adjustment in the schedule. The Seahawks wrapped up their Thursday practice just after 2, a couple hours earlier than normal. The players will return to the facility on Friday afternoon, giving them some time to celebrate the holiday.

“We give the guys a chance to get home tonight,” Carroll said on Christmas Eve. “We have a lot of guys with kids and family and stuff like that so they’ll have a chance to have a Christmas morning and then we’ll get going at noontime.”

Carroll said it’s important to carve out that time for the team to enjoy the holiday, but there’s also a balance to maintain with regard to the week’s preparation for a game that remains important on Sunday.

“I think we should always recognize (the holiday),” Carroll said. “We don’t need to be so crazy that we can’t. They don’t get all the time off, either. They’re still working, but try to recognize enough of an opportunity so everyone can feel the holidays and be with the family.”

The Seahawks had six players who did not practice on Thursday. Of those, only running back Marshawn Lynch has been ruled out, though tight end Anthony McCoy (ankle) and defensive tackle Jordan Hill (toe) are not expected to play.

Other than Okung and Chancellor, the other question mark is receiver Doug Baldwin, who has not practiced yet because of a hamstring injury. Carroll indicated that Baldwin was expected to practice at least to a limited extent on Friday, but won’t know his status until Sunday.

“He’ll go all the way to game time,” Carroll said. “But he feels very good, but we’re still going to be slow to bring him back. So he’ll do some stuff tomorrow, and we’ll take it all the way to game time on that.”
