Seahawks punter Jon Ryan: “I’m weird in a totally normal way”
No NFL team is without its share of competition. The Seahawks may have the market cornered, though, considering their punter and kicker have an unofficial battle over their weirdness.
To be fair, punter Jon Ryan and kicker Steven Hauschka are battling to be the less weird of the special-teams duo. Ryan may not have helped his case when he dropped this Yogi Berra-esque gem while talking to 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Bob, Groz and Tom” on Thursday, however.
“I think I’m weird in a totally normal way,” Ryan said. “You know, he’s weird in a weird way.”
Ryan’s case is that Hauschka is so weird, he makes even Ryan do a double-take every once in a while.
“I think he’s getting weirder with age. Just when I think he can’t get any weirder, he drops something on me (and) I’m like, ‘Wow, you’re weird, man,'” said Ryan. “I say this out of love because we’ve been playing together for five years now and honestly I think he’s one of the best kickers in the NFL and he’s had four phenomenal years here, but the guy’s weird. The guy’s weird.”
Ryan said Hauschka’s argument usually comes down to the fact that the punter is Canadian, but he doesn’t buy that his nationality inherently makes him weirder.
“That’s always his go-to, the country that I was born in is the reason that I am the way I am. I don’t know what his excuse is, then.”
Point taken.
