Mariners closer David Aardsma has suffered another medical setback.
An MRI revealed a grade two sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in Aardsma’s right elbow, the Mariners announced Tuesday. Aardsma will visit a doctor in California for a second opinion.
According to Will Carroll, a sports injury expert who writes for SportsIllustrated.com, a grade two sprain usually means “a significant but not complete tear of a ligament” and usually, but not always, requires Tommy John surgery.
Aardsma, 29, is on the disabled list while recovering from offseason hip surgery.
