Brock Huard lists his defensive ‘thumpers’ for the Seahawks to consider in the draft

The Seahawks could stand to get more physical next season, according to general manager John Schneider, but Brock Huard said this year’s NFL draft isn’t stocked with as many of the “thumpers” as he’d like to see.

With a likely tight salary cap to fill out the roster with any big-name free agents, much of the likely acquisitions will come through the draft.
Huard, who works as a television analyst for ESPN’s college football coverage, has a few defensive players with attitude that he believes would fit with the Seahawks.

OLB Deion Jones, LSU

Huard called Jones “an absolute tear” and said he’ll run the 40-yard dash in the low-4.5s at the scouting combine.

DT Jarran Reed, Alabama

Huard noted that Reed, listed at more than 300 pounds, chased down Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and said he’s a player that “just wants to take your teeth right out of your mouth.”

CB Jalen Ramsey, Florida State

Huard said Ramsey probably won’t be available by the time the Seahawks pick at No. 26 in the first round. He
said Ramsey’s “hands hang down to the ground” and that he “loves to pile drive, loves to pick guys up and then just straight DDT them in the ground.”

DT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville

Huard described Rankins as a “tweener” in that he’s undersized for a defensive tackle, similar to Seattle’s Michael Bennett. “He’s not really an end, he’s not really a tackle, he’s not really a pass-rusher, but all he is, kind of like Aaron Donald-light, is really productive and feisty on the D-line.”
