Griffey’s first AB, Washington Seattle redux

Ken Griffey Junior recorded his first plate appearance of the year tonite against Australia. The classic swing is still there as is the big broad smile. He worked the count to 3-2 fouled off a pitch then walked. He advanced on a passed ball, stopped at third on a Beltre base hit and was left at third on a broken bat bouncer for the third out. His second trip to the plate he road lefthander Travis Blackley’s pitch to the warning track in center field.

On the FSN broadcast tonight Mike Blowers and Dave Niehaus both stated that junior had not come here just to dh. And that he expected to play left field. Tonite Griffey did dh. Griffey has 10 Golf Gloves and shares the Rawlings alltime GG outfield with the late Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays.

With 11 guys playing in the WBC the M’s are going to get a good look at the young players.

The talk around the office today was how far Seattle U. has to come to be competitive at the Division 1 level next year. I would keep in mind that the Huskies are ranked 16th in the country, are the Pac 10 champs and probably will land in the sweet 16. For now it’s enough that Seattle U. is back and they are in good hands.
