New Champs

The Washington men should be playing in Portland the week of March 15th. I’m guessing they are a 3 seed at the Rose garden regardless of the outcome of the PAC 10 tournament. And call me a homer but are there any better for coach of the year than Romar, player of the year Brockman and freshman of the year I.T.? The Cougs will make lots of noise at the tournament…they may win it. If not they surely will host an NIT game in front of a great crowd at Friel.

I had the good fortune of broadcasting an ESPNTV with Mark Jackson from Utah last night. Jackson is top 5 among NBA analysts in my book. He is a “truth teller” and a real gentleman. Watch tomorrow on ABC when San Antonio plays Phoenix. Shaq has been trashing Stan Van Gundy this week and Stan’s brother Jeff is part of the broadcast trio with Mike Breen and MJ. These three always have terrific NBA discussions with no holds barred. No doubt the FLOP FLAP will get some air.

The Louisville Cardinals led by the splendid Terence Williams from the 206 clinched the Big East regular season with a win at WVA. Williams will play in the association. I think he would be a safe bet for a mid first round pick.

While watching the Midnight Madness show with Doug Gotlieb a couple of things came to mind. Gotlieb called Jerry West “Zeke from Cabin Creek”. That was a handle Chick Hearn attempted to give Jerry but the HOFer wouldn’t have it. West from W.Virginia considered it demeaning. May want to call him Logo, Doug. And secondly, watching Bobby Huggins in a too tight black suit,black shirt,yellow tie and Rick Pitino with a blue chalk pin stripe wide lapel number I’m reminded of an old Jimmy Cagney gangster movie. I’m just sayin….
