A thought about flag-waving

This may be a little strange considering that there is quite a bit of football going on right now, but as I was perusing the school’s website while doing some research I did notice the many “Wave the Cougar Flag” logos and mentions throughout, not to mention, the flag-waving site that’s dedicated to Cougar flag-waving.

flag waver

This made me think: If we’re going to be the flag-waving school, shouldn’t we go all out and be THE flag-waving school?

I’m not talking about two flags on Gameday anymore. I’m talking about 35,000 flags, big and small, in the hands of every single attendee of every single Cougar home game.

Fans can design their own flags and should be encouraged to bring them in. Sponsors should provide tons of little flags. Flags should be attached to every part of the stadium, including the big bronze cougar outside of the Stadium Way entrance. On game days, there should be a flag in one of those paws.

Tunnels? Flags.

Concourses? Lots of flags.

Popcorn machines? Flags.

Urinals? Husky Flags.

Different sections can have different flags. Especially drunk students can wave their crimson and gray “Busch Lite” flag. The older fans on the south side can wave their “I Love Babe Hollingberry” flags. My young children can wave their “I’d rather be elsewhere and I’m going to scream until you people finally break down and take me to the CUB” flag.

The point being, of course, is that if we’re going to utilize this flag-waving to our advantage, there’s no reason that we should stop here. I want people who have no interest in Cougar football to tune in to games just to watch the spectacle of the flag-waving. Really, there’s no reason to half-arse a good gimmick.

I promise some real football news soon. I just had to get that off my chest.

Go Cougs!
