We’re introducing some of the Mariners’ offseason additions during spring training. Here’s a personal look at Nathan Karns.

Position: Starting right-handed pitcher

Height/weight/age: 6-3/225/28

Hometown: Arlington, Texas

How acquired: Via trade along with two minor-leaguers from Tampa Bay for Brad Miller, Danny Farquhar and Logan Morrison.

Favorite cartoon growing up: “X-Men,” though he liked just about everything of the superhero genre. “The X-Men, Superman, Batman, I couldn’t get enough of it. The superhero, comic book type of cartoons, that’s what I was into.”

What superhero power I would want: “I would love to just be able to take off and fly.”

Go-to karaoke song: “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. “That’s the only song I really know how to sing through the whole way.”

Favorite band or artist: “Growing up, for rap I kinda liked listening to Eminem. For the rock and all that, my dad always played AC/DC when I was little so it kinda rubbed off on me. Believe it or not, I was kind of into Smash Mouth – “Hey now, you’re an all-star” – but that was like sixth grade, so I’m really tapping into some early ages. Now I’m really into country. I love George Strait, Kenny Chesney, a lot of the newer guys, Jason Aldean. So, I mean, I’m a wide range.”

Favorite home-cooked dish his wife makes: Trifle, though he’s unaware that’s the name of the treat. “My wife makes this simple dessert, it’s kind of like a white cake with vanilla pudding and strawberry, bananas and then whipped cream on top of it. I don’t even know what it’s called but it is my go-to dish. I beg her to make it a lot. She also does a really good salmon.”

What he’d be if he wasn’t a baseball player: Something related to engineering. “I’m big into (the TV show) ‘Gold Rush’ right now. I love seeing how those guys go up there into Alaska. It sounds like they’re just mining, but there’s a lot of engineering involved into it. That kinda draws me. Something that you have to figure out a plan and you have different stages of execution for it to all come together.”
