Video: Robinson Cano drills homer in first at-bat of Mariners season

The Mariners may have seen their opening-day win streak come to an end Monday, but that doesn’t mean they were without highlights.

The biggest one was Robinson Cano’s first-inning home run, an absolute laser he blistered on the second pitch he saw from Rangers ace Cole Hamels. As you can see in the video above, the homer didn’t get too far off the ground on its way to the right-field stands of Globe Life Park, but it didn’t need to with an exit velocity of 110 mph.

Cano wasn’t the only Mariners player to go yard off of Hamels – third baseman Kyle Seager added a blast of his own in the second inning.

Both homers were obviously good signs for two of the Mariners’ biggest stars. Cano is coming off one of the worst statistical seasons of his career and underwent double sports hernia surgery in the offseason, while there are questions about whether one-time All-Star Seager can return to the midsummer classic in his sixth year with Seattle.

Of note, Hamels is one of the best left-handed pitchers in the game, and gave up just two home runs to left-handed hitters all of last season. Cano and Seager? Yeah, both hit from the left side of the plate.
